IN THE SPOTLIGHT

The Foundry: Walnut Creek Approves Massive New Food Hall Downtown

After years of anticipation, Walnut Creek has given the green light for The Foundry, a 24,000-square-foot European-style food hall set to open in the heart of downtown. The project, located on the vacant lot across from Century Theaters at 1250 Locust Street, is expected to be a major culinary and social destination.

Originally proposed in 2018, The Foundry has faced multiple delays and revisions before finally securing city approval. The development will feature a two-story main structure, a spacious outdoor courtyard, and two additional buildings designed to enhance the food hall experience. Though details on vendors remain undisclosed, the concept is expected to offer a mix of specialty food vendors, restaurants, and possibly a brewery or wine bar. Inspired by popular European-style food halls, the space aims to bring a diverse selection of international cuisines, fresh market goods, and artisanal beverages to Walnut Creek.

Beyond dining, The Foundry’s open-air courtyard is envisioned as a community gathering space, potentially hosting live music, cultural events, and communal dining. If all goes according to plan, the development could add a dynamic new energy to the downtown area, attracting both locals and visitors.

However, despite receiving city approval, the project is not guaranteed to open just yet. Before construction can officially begin, key steps remain, including permit approvals and lease negotiations. The City of Walnut Creek’s website currently lists The Foundry as “Approved,” with the next milestone being a status update to “Under Construction.”

For Bay Area food enthusiasts, The Foundry promises to be an exciting new addition to the region’s dining scene. It will offer a unique blend of food, drinks, and social experiences in a vibrant, community-focused setting.

Walnut Creek Launches ADU Rebate Program, Offering Up to $15,000 for Homeowners

Walnut Creek homeowners have a new financial incentive to build Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) thanks to the Senate District 7 ADU Accelerator Program. Spearheaded by Senator Steve Glazer, the program provides rebates to encourage ADU construction as part of a broader effort to address California's housing crisis.

To qualify, homeowners must obtain a building permit between October 1, 2024, and March 31, 2025, and complete the ADU by August 31, 2026. Rebates are limited to one per homeowner and per residential lot, with units capped at 1,000 square feet.

Rebate amounts vary based on unit size and income restrictions:

  • Standard ADUs: Up to $7,500 for units under 500 square feet, with decreasing amounts for larger units.

  • Low-Income Restricted ADUs: Up to $15,000, provided the unit remains deed-restricted for 20 years.

The program aims to make ADU construction more accessible and increase affordable housing in the city. Homeowners interested in participating should review the eligibility requirements and apply within the designated timeframe.
