The Answer to the Walnut Creek Spotlight Hook Trivia Question πππ
D) 2012
In 2012, California implemented the "top-two" primary system for its congressional and statewide office elections. This system, also known as a "jungle primary," allows all candidates to run in the same primary regardless of political party affiliation. The top two vote-getters, regardless of party, then advance to the general election. This change aimed to increase voter participation and encourage candidates to appeal to a broader range of voters. The move was a significant shift from the previous system, where each party's primary was restricted to its own registered members, often resulting in the nomination of candidates who appealed to the party's base rather than the general electorate. The top-two system was approved by California voters through Proposition 14 in June 2010 and was first implemented in the 2012 election cycle.
