Fiesta Cultural Week Kicks Off in Walnut Creek

The Fiesta Cultural, a week-long celebration of Latin American arts and culture, starts today at the Lesher Center for the Arts in Walnut Creek. Organized by the Lesher Center and Diablo Regional Arts Association, the event runs from July 16 to 20 and features a variety of family-friendly activities and performances.

Key events include:

  • Ballet Hispánico (July 17, 7:30 PM): Known for over 50 years of innovative artistry, this dance company celebrates Latinx cultures through dance.

  • Lucky Diaz and the Family Jam Band (July 18, 10 AM): This bilingual indie music group for kids, known for their Latin GRAMMY® award-winning songs, will perform a morning jam session.

  • Summer Sounds: Chika Di (July 18, 5:30 PM): Colombian artist Diana Trujillo, also known as Chika Di, will perform a free outdoor concert featuring traditional Colombian music.

  • Spanish Harlem Orchestra (July 19, 7:30 PM): The three-time GRAMMY® award-winning Salsa and Latin jazz band will deliver an authentic New York style salsa performance.

  • Fiesta Cultural Street Fair (July 20, Noon - 7 PM): A free, family-friendly festival featuring live music, dance performances, a mini makers mercado, food, face painting, and a pop-up dance party.

  • Latinx Comedy Night (July 20, 7:30 PM): Enjoy a night of laughter with Latin flair presented by Best of San Francisco Comedy.

A Concord Man is in Custody for a Recent Walnut Creek Shooting

On July 11, 2024, at 7:00 a.m., patrol officers were dispatched to the 1600 block of South Main Street upon receiving a 911 call of a shot being fired by one person toward another. The victim was not struck by gunfire and was not injured. On the evening of July 11th, detectives located Jose Cavazos in Concord and arrested him in connection to this shooting incident. On July 12, 2024, this case was presented to the District Attorney’s Office, and the following charges were filed against Jose Cavazos: • PC 245(b) - Assault with a Semiautomatic Firearm • PC 12022.5(a) - Firearm Enhancement • PC 246.3(a) - Discharge of a Firearm with Gross Negligence • PC 29900(a)(1) - Possession of a Firearm with Violent Prior Convictions Jose Cavazos remains in custody, and his bail has been set at $870,000. The Walnut Creek Police Investigations Bureau continues to follow up on additional leads at this time and is asking anyone who might have any information relating to this incident to please call Walnut Creek Police at 925-943-5844. Police believe this was an isolated incident and that no other people in the area were at risk.

GoFundMe for Lemongrass Farms

The Walnut Creek Farmers' Market has launched a GoFundMe for Lemongrass Farms to support medical bills, rehabilitation, and lost income for two members critically injured in a DUI accident on June 2nd on Locust Street. (link)
